Why does the CD player play constantly?

The CD player plays constantly because there is no way for a telephone system to control the starting and stopping. The phone system doesn't even know that there's a CD player there - it just connects it's Music On Hold port to the caller, and the caller hears whatever is plugged in to the port, if anything!

Will playing constantly damage the CD player?

Most businesses use a CD player for Music on Hold without any problems. CD players usually last for many years when working like this, and even if they do break they are cheap to replace. It is possible to buy a CD player which is designed for this purpose, but they tend to cost more than a standard CD player.

Is it expensive to run a CD player constantly?

A CD player costs less than a standard light bulb to run. In fact, a full hi-fi stereo system with amplifier and speakers uses only 80 watts, compared with light bulbs, which are usually between 60 and 100 watts. (Source: NYSEG Home Energy Use Guide 2001.)

Why use a CD player for Music On Hold?

Compact Discs and the machines that play them are tried and tested technology.  They're reliable, inexpensive, and easy to replace.  Other hardware, such as dedicated chips or smartcards, aren't as common, and as such tend to be more expensive, less well supported, and more difficult to use.

Can I have my CD play from the start for each caller placed on hold?

There is no way to do this, as there is no way for a telephone system to control the starting and stopping of a CD player or any other external device connected to it.

We retain the copy right for the content of all our CDs, but grant a free lifetime Music On Hold usage license to the user. This basically means that you can use it as much as you want, but you can't make copies of the CD or any part of it.

What music can I choose from? / Can I have just speech without music? / Can I have just music without speech?

Every CD comes with five varied styles of music, and the same scripts are spoken over the top of each one. If requested, your CD can include a track of just speech with no music (at no extra cost). This way, you can use only the track you like most, or use them all. The Basic CD also includes the five music tracks with no speech, and a track of speech with no music.

With the 'personalised' option, is the entire script recorded together, or is only my company name inserted into a pre-recorded section?

The entire script is recorded. If your company name was inserted into a ready-recorded script, it would sound strange and disjointed, so to keep the script sounding natural, we record it all.
